MISHAWAKA, Ind.  — An unclear holdup note may have botched a burglary attempt.

Police are searching for two unidentified men wanted for passing a hold up note that was so confusing the clerk had to ask what it was, sparking a spat between the suspects who gave up and left the store.

The two would-be robbers entered a 7-Eleven store and lingered around for several minutes before picking up several items and carrying them to the checkout counter, according to the clerk.

The shorter of the two men told the clerk he needed to get some money from his car. His suspected accomplice followed.

After spending about five minutes outside, the two re-entered the store. The shorter man had a checkbook in hand and asked the clerk for a pen, according to police.

The man then handed the clerk his checkbook with a carbon copy of a check bearing the words, "put it in the bag." Below this phrase was a cryptic statement the clerk claims was some sort of threat, according to police.

The clerk, apparently confused by the odd note, reportedly asked the shorter man, "What is this?"

The man allegedly responded he did not know because his companion had written the note. The men began to argue over the note before leaving, the clerk told police. They drove away in a dark-colored Suzuki, police said.

Police suspect the pair may be responsible for a similar 7-Eleven robbery just a few days earlier.
