Just The Way The Cookie Crumbles.
How in the world did snicker doodle cookies become
the focal point of a California lawsuit? It all started when a Carson,
California councilwoman was sued by her opponent for alleged
electioneering after delivering cookies to nearly every poll worker in the
Los Angeles suburb of Carson on election day last March.
But a Superior Court judge wasn't buying into this sweet tooth scenario,
ruling that the gesture -- the delivery of snicker doodle cookies to 24 of
30 polling places -- didn't constitute electioneering. This decision
allows Councilwoman Julie Ruiz Raber to keep her council post.
Ruiz Raber, after the sweet ruling in her favor, called the lawsuit a sour
grapes "frivolous lawsuit."
Vera Robles DeWitt, a former councilwoman, filed the suit in April after
losing the election by 181 votes. Her attorney claimed that the cookie
deliveries were an attempt to influence voting.
"My one-word definition of electioneering is campaigning. That did not
take place here," the judge said in his ruling. In other words, that's
just the way the cookie crumbles.
