Lawsuit Over Smarty Cat's Degree.
It looks like Colby Nolan's MBA degree is not worth
the paper it's written on, at least according to the Pennsylvania attorney
general's office which has sued an online university where Colby got his
diploma.
But don't shed too many tears for ole Colby, since
the lack of a degree isn't going to drastically affect his earning
capacity any time soon. You see, Colby is a cat.
But Trinity Southern University in Texas, which issued the degree to
Colby, along with a cellular company and the two brothers who ran them,
are in some very hot water indeed. These defendants have been accused of
allegedly selling bogus academic degrees, including Colby's.
It turns out that investigators paid $299 to procure a bachelor's degree
for Colby, the 6-year-old black cat of a deputy attorney general. The
school, which offers no classes, allegedly determined Colby's extensive
resume - which included baby sitting and retail management - entitled him
to not just a bachelor's degree but a master of business administration
degree. And Colby even received a transcript that listed the cat's course
work and 3.5 grade-point average.
The state is seeking a permanent injunction, civil penalties, costs and
restitution for violating consumer law and restrictions on unsolicited
e-mail ads.
