A client sued her lawyer in 1999 for emotional distress after he allegedly spanked her bare buttocks. The woman's lawyer did not acknowledge the paddling, however he conceded that he had raised the idea. His threat, he said, was meant to stop the 22 year old woman from fidgeting before court, hoping to make her look more believable while testifying. After he was sued, the lawyer claimed he didn't have any assets. The woman proceeded to sue his insurance company with whom he had a malpractice policy for $250,000. American Home insurance company refused to pay out, saying that "The perverted act of intentionally fondling the bare bottoms of female clients cannot and is not part of the practice of law." A federal judge ruled that a Connecticut attorney's malpractice insurer did not have to pay a $250,000 judgment. The Connecticut Law Tribune said the whole thing "is certain to make the legal system the butt of more jokes." Source: Law.com, "Objection, your honor! Spanking the witness!" January 4, 2004.
